Side control escapes

If there ever was one thing that was dramatically important for developing a strong game in the grappling/submission wrestling realm it would be the development of solid pin and side control escapes. Why?

If they can't pin you, how can they hurt you? Without pins, the only submissions that are a threat are the guillotine choke, toe hold and the bent armlock.
