Using the Legs in the Open Guard
I was reviewing some of my old jiu jitsu notes and came across some info that I thought I would share with all:
When it comes to the open guard it is critical to use your legs to control your opponent more than you use your arms and hands. The reason for this is that there is simply more strength in the legs as well as more endurance capacity. If you try to use your hands too often you will find yourself tiring quicker as well as finding your ability to push off an opponent with your hands to be difficult. (When I saw push off I am referring to keeping their weight from collapsing on top of you) Of course, using your legs as you primary defense during the open guard is not exactly easy so this will take time to develop...but...it is well worth developing because it will definitely take your game to a higher level.

I'd like to add- don't forget to actively use your hips, never lie flat in your guard. It's basic advice, and everyone who grapples should know that, but it still surprises me to see how often that cardinal rule of utilizing a guard is forgotten.
Anyway, I run punchkickchoke.blogspot.com- would you like to trade links?
Legs can be used to defend nicely if use properly.
